INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY

The term Industrial Archaeology embraces a varied and widespread heritage that groups landscapes, sites and buildings with an historical value related to the territory and which also includes infrastructures, machinery, production cycles, archives, documentation, products and objects of various nature. It represents a patrimony to study and understand the most recent past of modern industrial civilisation, to understand its mechanisms and phases, finding new answers about our way of living.

This term was coined in the 1950s in England and is related to a period of change and destruction during which old factories and facilities were pulled down and rebuilt without second thoughts. In Italy, attention to this subject developed only in the 1970s.

All the factories that were established with the arrival of industrialisation, from the spinning factories to the kilns, or the factories in which production processes are based on the concept of continuity, are examples of monuments which today are grouped under the term Industrial Archaeology.

Friuli Venezia Giulia has a significant industrial heritage to be discovered and enhanced which in terms of architectural language and shape cannot be grouped into standard models.

The architectural language of the industries has drawn a lot from local customs and the use of local materials: the kilns, which are an excellent example, have unusual and original shapes that derive from the functions attributed to them.

The manufacturing history of the shipyards of Monfalcone, the urbanisation and industrial sites of Torviscosa, the factory of the Municipality of Ruda, and the complex of the Old Port of Trieste are just some of the typical examples in this region.

A LOOK BACK IN HISTORY:
FROM
CIVIDALE TO PALMANOVA AND AQUILEIA

Just a few kilometres away there is “Forum Julii” (from here the name ‘Friuli’), founded in the middle of the 1st century BC and first of the 35 Longobard Dukedoms in Italy; in Cividale del Friuli visitors can admire the transparent waters of the Natisone River from the Ponte del Diavolo (bridge) and, in the town centre, the renaissance Duomo with the nearby Christian Museum, the Oratorio di Santa Maria in Valle (or Small Longobard Temple) and the extraordinary findings in the National Archaeological Museum that offer a closer look at the world of the Longobards in particular during the 8th century.
Annual historical or cultural events such as the Messa dello Spadone (6 January) or the Mittelfest (end July) enrich the tourist offer of Cividale.

A short distance away visitors can contemplate the magnificent view and at the same time admire a historical and artistic site by visiting the Santuario Mariano di Castelmonte and the Abbazia di Rosazzo.
By visiting the local industries visitors can discover natural areas which are unique such as, in the “Lowlands of Friuli”, the area of the Springs or the various protected areas near the Grado Lagoon or near the Mouth of the Isonzo River.

History and art merge in Aquileia, a Roman colony that dates back to the 2nd century BC and UNESCO site since 1999: the remains of the ancient Fluvial Port, of many Roman domus and of the old road network together with the rich collections of the local National Archaeological Museum give visitors an idea of how more than 2000 years ago this was a commercial and cultural metropolis; the Basilica Patriarcale is a precious shrine that contains floor mosaics which are unique in terms of preservation and symbolic representations, and Roman frescoes of indescribable beauty.

Palmanova, fortress-town which dates back to the end of the 16th century, is a monument of national interest and a rare example of “ideal” city”, geometrically perfect, in the shape of a nine-pointed star with a defence complex made up of ramparts, moats and gates; the complex was extended over the centuries from the period of the Serenissima Republic of Venice to Napoleon: the piazza Grande, the Duomo and the two Museums (Civic and Historical-Military) will fill with enthusiasm even occasional tourists.

The following companies can be visited in these areas: Tonutti and T&T Telematica e Trasporti.

T&T
“Along the roads of ancient Rome a milestone told the traveller that he was only a thousand feet from his destination”.

Aquileia is not far away and nearby Roman presence is proved by the archaeological remains in the silent countryside of the lowlands in Friuli.

The small municipality of Ruda shows its attachment to its historical heritage through its vocation for the future: here technology has the charm of a journey in time, it is fascinating, approachable and respectful of the past. T&t was established with the idea of applying information technology and telecommunications to transport people and goods in the mobility, environment and waste sectors.

The patented solutions were turned into real items in the old starch factory closed in the eighties; a century old factory which used to be one of the most advanced in Europe, a model of modernity in terms of processing, production and social legislation.

Raffaele Caltabiano, general manager of t&t, knows everything there is to know about his predecessor in this area, the entrepreneur from Friuli Luigi Chiozza, a scientist of the level of Pasteur who actually visited the area. Chiozza innovated the local agricultural processing techniques and discovered that starch could also be extracted from rice and not only from wheat, with excellent results in terms of quality.

Today, in the shadow of the factory still home to fascinating machines and enormous empty rooms that await to be enlivened, in a small space inside the former villa of the factory manager, another type of industriousness produces items and systems that improve our quality of life; most of the time we are unaware of the improvements and we do not perceive the value of these products.

A curious itinerary of technological awareness presented using simple language which reveals a new point of view on everyday life. Even the simple relationship with our PC will no longer be a dark mystery.

Tonutti
Always one step ahead

Telling the entrepreneurial story of the Tonutti family means telling the story of the evolution of the rural world and peasant civilisation in Friuli over the last century, starting from 1864 when the founder of the family was born: Luigi or in local dialect “master Vigj”, a famous blacksmith.

In all these years the company has grown but the Tonutti family has always stayed in the country village of Remanzacco, from the first workshop to the factory in the Sixties up to the most recent and modern headquarters in the countryside covering a surface area of 42,000 m²; in the president’s office with a view on the mountains that frame the region there is only a desk, typical of the essential nature of the people from Friuli. A deep connection with the land and nature characterises this family of entrepreneurs, world leaders in the production of agricultural machinery, from mechanically driven ploughs to the first hay rake which was invented in the Fifties, tools necessary to modernise agriculture and exported all over the world.

The Gino Tonutti Museum, wanted by Mr. Gino, father of today’s president, tells the story of rural progress in particular in this region, through a vast collection of equipment from the end of the 19th century and working equipment from the early days of agricultural mechanisation; there is also an area dedicated to silkworm production which in the last century represented an important means of support for many families in Friuli.

Mechanics and engines also innovated the world of transport: evidence of this is the important collection of vintage cars and motorbikes, a great family passion, that Mr. Gino used to share with enthusiastic visitors, even coming from abroad, to whom he offered bread and salami, typical of local hospitality.

The current generation has increased the company’s responsibility towards the environment which translates into constant research and development of low environmental impact agricultural machines with reduced CO² emissions. For the active commitment to the promotion of sustainable agriculture worldwide, Cav. Carlo Tonutti took part in the UN Forum on climate changes.
