DESIGN IS ALIVE

In a society like today’s, where standardisation often represents an easy choice which can, however, be detrimental to new experiments and proposals, the design industry in Friuli Venezia Giulia feels the deep need to distinguish itself and be distinguished.

Through continuous research and creation, with a view to the future and roots solidly in the tradition of craftsmanship, the local industry aims to preserve and enhance in time the memory of ancient processing techniques gradually adapting them to a wise use of innovative technological solutions.

This positive behaviour has resulted in the creation of products in harmony with their time and unique in terms of shape and function.

The modern culture of living represented by the concept of each element as a whole, abandoning the idea of a matching universe.

Each item, antique or modern, classic or industrial, technological or hand made, acquires its true value not in virtue of its style but also in virtue of its history.

Nowadays, furniture is a blend of warmth and rigour with essential and concrete proposals.

Continuous research has rediscovered the taste of simple things, learning to recycle, renovate and transform.

The design of the companies in this region distinguishes itself for its ability to interpret a world of rooted traditions and the care for quality details expressed through simple and original shapes.

Design is alive… in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

THE HILLS AND THE AREA OF COLLIO

The hills run across central Friuli and extend to the feet of the Carnic and Julian Prealps almost embracing the upper plain of Friuli from the left bank of the Tagliamento River to the area of Cividale, that is to say the Eastern Hills of Friuli.

The industrial sector of this area which was heavily hit by an earthquake in 1976 represents the implementation of the so-called “Friuli model” of post seismic reconstruction: the winning choice was to start again by building first of all the production facilities, in other words employment, and then the houses, monuments and the artistic and historical heritage.

In the area of Osoppo/Majano, it is worth visiting Gemona and Venzone, two towns of Roman origin which developed in the Middle Ages thanks to trade, becoming also important religious centres; they were both restored through the process of anastylosis, partially the former and fully the latter.

The industrial sites are not in contrast with the local environment which was originally of a rural nature and famous worldwide for the excellent wine produced especially in the eastern side.

An amazing site awaits visitors in the Chair District: the Highest Chair in the World, which stands proudly 20 metres high.

Moving eastwards from the province of Udine there is the area of Collio (Italian word that originates from the local word “Cuei”) Goriziano which extends into Slovenia where it takes on the name “Brda”: fascinating glimpses, in no way inferior to the more famous hills in other regions of Italy, will surprise tourists attracted to this land of wines of excellent quality and of local fetes and typical events often in Hapsburg style.

The companies that can be visited in this area are: Calligaris, Fantoni, Moroso, Snaidero and Tonon & C.

Calligaris
The genius that makes the difference

A true passion for work plus ethics and tradition in the true sense of the words multiplied by eighty seven years of production are the founding elements of this business model that has recently chosen a new identification symbol to represent a company permeated with industriousness, talent and reliability since its origins: a white woodpecker against a red background.
Its story started in 1923 in the first workshop of chairs of the founder Antonio; he was followed by Romeo who moved the business to a large open space unaware that in the decades that would follow that space would be completely filled by the growing size of the “capannone” (industrial warehouse), a word which in the area of Manzano is synonymous with a developing business.
In the chair triangle area, women caned chairs in their courtyards while cooking polenta and looking after their children who learned the art and culture of making while playing; the men worked in the joiner’s shop and school children learned geography by carefully writing the labels for the chairs to be shipped. This world changed rapidly in the Sixties with the advent of mechanisation; silos for the collection of shavings made their appearance and other companies that manufactured machines for the chair making industry or single components started to develop around the chair manufacturing companies. Tradition was followed by innovation and interpretation of the future with the production of chairs, tables, furniture for living spaces and furniture accessories; the role players of this part of the story are the brothers Walter and Alessandro Calligaris which have been working in the company since 1962. Their first important decision was the purchase of one of the first chair caning machines that finished a seat in one minute. Another important decision among the many ones taken was made “later in the Eighties, when the passion for “made in Italy” products exploded”: not to supply only wholesalers but to create a relationship with end users through an actual sales network; not merely an increase in independence through an in-company project and design office and a team focused on the brand and on sales, but also an international dimension and a widespread diffusion of the brand. The visit to the factories and the showroom in Manzano offers the opportunity to discover the philosophy and passion behind the development of the products and modern design lines displayed among enlarged official documents showing the origins of the company; an idea of Alessandro Calligaris, the president of the company.

Fantoni Group
The architecture of living

When arriving in the heart of Friuli, where the land gently rolls into low and rounded mountains which are not yet the Alps, it is possible to see from a distance the Osoppo industrial area which comprises many famous large factories including Fantoni. The corporate colours identify the different buildings that form the extensive complex with rational and monumental aesthetics. Its layout was designed in the Sixties by the architect Gino Valli with a view to sustainable development: inspired by the “feng shui” concept, the architect created a space where plants and concrete, industrial spaces and family atmosphere coexists in harmony; this example of industrial architecture correctly interprets the spirit of Fantoni, leader in the production of mdf and chipboard panels and office furniture. Fantoni was established in 1882 and has been a protagonist of the culture, technological innovation, architecture and design of the 20th century. Fantoni products have been the protagonists of the evolution of work spaces which over the years have gone from being a-technological and a-functional to featuring a synthesis of technology, nature and well-being in modern times; these changes have been part of the progressive, at times traumatic, evolution of society and the economy. In 1968 the revolutionary German designer Herber Ohl and Gino Valle from Friuli tackled the problem of going beyond the concept of office as a mere hierarchical structure and developed an open system, which was functional and could be transformed: the Multipli Series, which, not by chance, is part of the permanent collection at the Moma in New York. Images in the Fantoni showroom illustrate the history of the company and run through the past decades revealing details of a change whose effects are now part of the life of current generations. The goals of the past are the driving force of the objectives of tomorrow, even unknown ones, pursued by the Fantoni research centre. The continuous elaboration of ideas has the same unstoppable rhythm as the continuous cycle machines that transform selected wood chips into mdf panels. The visitors are taken along the entire production chain which is self-sufficient also in terms of energy; from the large raw material storage area, where it is possible to come across Cav. Giovanni Fantoni in his car while visiting the company, to the “capanna” (warehouse) and the control room with a real time view “into” the enormous boiler, to the different production phases of the wide range of mdf applications patented by Fantoni.

Moroso
Shapes and colours for tomorrow’s living

Many terms and definitions are used to describe Moroso products, a wide and varied range which is the result of collaborations with architects and designers from all over the world: from the most qualified and famous ones to young talents; they come to this family run company because it has the capacity to listen, interact and interpret even the most daring project.

In order to become part of the creative process of another person it is necessary to have distinguishing qualities such as the respect for the ideas of others and at the same time the vision of how one’s own creativity, manual skills, craftsmanship know-how and handling of the most varied materials can be used to create something that does not exist but which the businessman’s instinct says will be successful... and will sell. The company was founded in 1952 with the reproduction of antique furniture and later acquired important orders to furnish ships. The arrival of the new generation marked a turning point in the project and design research field. The company, which was born in the years in which Italian design was making a name for itself, has worked with great names but this has never stifled the innate drive to search everywhere for new ideas, to create a revolutionary world of shapes and colours that can be lived as a whole or in terms of single components depending on how much of ourselves each one of us wants to portray through objects.

As a brand advertised in fashion and interior design magazines, it is usually associated with the extravagant personality of famous designers; it is therefore not easy to imagine the persons behind this company in Friuli and its production chain. Roberto Moroso has the concreteness and spontaneity to balance the creative talent of his sister, in a winning alliance which has created a brand with a strong identity which has achieved great success in international markets.

Moroso designs and manufactures sofas, armchairs and complements using industrialised processes combined with craftsman finishes and attention to the details which are an important part of the products of the Moroso collections. Moroso has always been committed to the environment and has been the first company in Italy to be awarded environmental quality certifications.

Snaidero
Quality in life and for life

The identity of Snaidero, one of the leading brands in the production of modular kitchens and leading Italian group in Europe, is strongly connected to its founder, Rino Snaidero, a farsighted and enlightened entrepreneur who inaugurated his first furniture production workshop in Majano in 1946.

His first intuition was to stop producing on order and to anticipate market demand; his second great intuition was to produce kitchens, as in Italy, unlike America, there was no mass production of kitchens after the Second World War. The company went on to grasp the opportunity offered by the great rebirth of Italian genius and style to create anonymous yet aesthetically beautiful models which led, in the Sixties, to the first collaborations with some of the major Italian designers: Mangiarotti, Gae Aulenti, Offredi and Pininfarina and many more.

The exhilarating growth of the company was suddenly stopped by an event which could not be foreseen in business terms: on 6 May 1976 a strong earthquake hit Friuli which was just getting back on its feet after being impoverished by two wars and mass emigration.

As is typical of the people of Friuli, Snaidero, with a great sense of responsibility, together with its workers reorganised the company and immediately started producing again.

The Seventies and Eighties saw the development and drive towards internationalisation with the opening of offices and sales branches abroad.

In the Nineties the position of Managing Director was handed over to Edi Snaidero and the Snaidero Group was created and consolidated through a series of acquisitions in European markets of reference.

Thanks to the careful management of its industrial vocation and to historical collaborations with the greatest Made in Italy designers, Snaidero has demonstrated over the years the genuine values of national design, a synthesis of shape and functionality, harmony and good taste.

The establishment in 2006 of the Rino Snaidero Scientific Foundation, named after the founder of the group, strengthened and underlined the mission to continuously generate ideas and positive values to improve the quality of life in the home.

Tonon
Trendy design

Industrial districts are an important and particular element of the Italian manufacturing structure. The district of Manzano covers 11 municipalities whose vocation and natural talent for the production of wine and chairs dates back to the Middle Ages.

From the historical one million chairs produced in the area before the Great War, the Fifties marked an important turning point: the great Italian style designers started collaborating with the companies, the area was industrialised and new records were achieved with the production of over 30% of the world production of chairs.

Tonon was established in 1926 and was one of the first companies in Manzano and driving force for the development of the entire area in the following years.

Today Tonon is one of the best known international brands in the world of chairs and tables, combining tradition and innovation and using different materials to create unique interior design items in terms of design and quality, all completely made in Italy. The secret lies in research and experimentation, in a craftsman’s heart and entrepreneurial mind, in communication and in the culture of marketing. Tonon in fact was one of the first to use these instruments to beat market competitors while the district slowed down under the shadow of the imposing 20 metre high wooden chair which still today is the symbol of the district.

A long list of famous international designers have created exclusive models which have achieved great success in the market and the appreciation of the chair sector.

The chairman Sandro Tonon, who follows from close by the creative process of his future chairs, will reveal some information on how to relate to an object which in terms of lines and proportions does not comply with formal rigour criteria but rather creates an identity of its own, provoking strong emotions.
